Supervisory Skills for the First Time Supervisor
Many individuals are promoted to the role of supervisor with little or no supervisory skills training and then are expected to deal with the many challenges that leading a team of people can involve. The typical new supervisor has not yet learned to clarify their role as a leader and may make many costly mistakes in dealing with others. This supervisory skills training workshop provides individuals with the skills, and most importantly, the confidence to communicate and lead their employees for positive results.
Course Objectives
- Understand the supervisor’s role in the organization including; identification of the important qualities of a supervisor and understand the differences and similarities in supervision, management, and leadership roles.
- Learn basic principles for all human interactions and understand task and content dynamics in dealing with people.
- Learn to delegate and to establish clear performance expectations. Participants will assess their delegation skills and learn how and when to communicate job expectations.
- Since giving constructive feedback is often one of the biggest challenges for a new supervisor, participants will learn a step-by-step process that makes feedback constructive, non-threatening, and focuses on problem-solving rather than name-calling. The supervisory skills training will include an opportunity to practice giving constructive feedback.
- Manage performance when it moves beyond feedback to include disciplinary action.
- Praise and reward performance including creative ideas for rewarding and motivating employees.
- Review case studies for practice and to learn supervisory skills by using real-life challenging situations.
